"the Here & There of God"
We say:
God is on the mountain top, God is in the valley.
Yet even so, this does not give us an adequate picture. God is in the Highest of Heights, and the deepest of depths, and yet, He is even far beyond both.
People often speak of God as if He is something to be reached, or attained to, as if God is at the top of a mountain we can climb. This is how we often descibe our journey with Christ; as climbling "the mountain of God". This is a fine illustration of our need to strive continually for God, but it falls completely and utterly short and fails to realize the "Here & There" of God.
We often think of us and God being on a linear scale of some sort. "I am 'HERE', God is 'THERE'.--so I need to travel from "Here" to "There"....And of course we, as "good Christians" know that journey is impossible on our own.
However, I believe not only is the journey impossible, but the conceived path of the journey is completely mistaken. God is NOT at the top of a mountain, God is NOT in the depths of a valley. (though in a very real sense He is in both) God is on a completely different unconceivable scale. We cannot ascend to God, because He is not even in our realm of conceivability. Hence our relationship with God is beyond a linear journey, up and down, and across mountains. God's journey for us is so much greater; it is up, down, across, through, in, beneath, around, and beyond.
It is NOT a journey for those who are considered strong, but rather for those of us who know we are weak.
